India solar manufacturing self‑reliance push
Overview
In early August, industry leaders highlighted the rapid expansion of India’s domestic solar module capacity to roughly 170‑180 GW, while cell, ingot and wafer output also grew. Executives stressed that achieving a fully self‑reliant supply chain would require domestic production of ancillary components such as junction boxes, interconnect busbars, encapsulants, sealants, solar glass, aluminium frames and DC cables, together with robust quality testing and policy support. They warned that module capacity now far exceeds near‑term demand, creating overcapacity and pricing pressure, and anticipated consolidation in the sector.
A few days later, the government announced a new Production‑Linked Incentive scheme targeting the upstream segment of the photovoltaic value chain. The programme aims to establish more than 10 GW of domestic polysilicon capacity, extending existing incentives for modules and cells. Officials said the scheme will reduce reliance on Chinese imports, strengthen industrial capabilities, and help meet broader targets of 80 GW of ingot and wafer capacity by 2028 and 500 GW of non‑fossil‑fuel power by 2030. Together, the industry calls for quality standards and the policy incentive for polysilicon illustrate India’s coordinated effort to build an end‑to‑end solar manufacturing ecosystem.
