India’s solar output jumps 57% in June as rooftop scheme reaches nearly 4 million installations

India’s solar power generation rose 57.1% year‑on‑year in June 2026, reaching 20,307 million units (20.3 billion kWh) and overtaking wind as the largest non‑hydro renewable source. The surge reflects rapid capacity growth, with installed solar capacity climbing to 162.15 GW by the end of June, up from 116.25 GW a year earlier.

Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme, a total of 3,972,447 rooftop solar systems have been installed since its launch in February 2024, adding 6.7 GW of capacity and benefiting 22.71 lakh households nationwide. In the 2025‑26 fiscal year alone, 18.71 lakh systems were added, reducing electricity bills for millions of consumers and providing zero‑bill periods for many rural households.
