India's Supreme Court rejects urgent pleas on NEET re‑test and CBSE three‑language policy
The Supreme Court of India declined to list urgently the petitions seeking a postponement of the NEET‑UG re‑examination scheduled for June 21, after the original test was cancelled because of a question‑paper leak. The bench, headed by the Chief Justice, referred the matter to a larger bench already hearing related NEET cases. The National Testing Agency had cancelled the May 3 exam on May 12, and the petitions argued that the short interval left candidates insufficient time to prepare and caused stress and anxiety.
In a separate ruling, the Court also refused interim relief against the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) three‑language policy for Class 9 students. The policy, part of the National Education Policy 2020, requires students to study three languages – at least two Indian languages – from the 2026‑27 academic session. The Court ordered that the plea be heard together with other pending petitions on July 14. Both decisions affect millions of students across India and set the timetable for further judicial review of these education reforms.
