India's TRAI blacklists 263 senders, acts against 183,000 telecom resources in Q1 FY27

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2026‑27, India's Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) took enforcement action against 183,000 telecom resources and blacklisted 263 senders to curb unsolicited commercial communications (UCC). The regulator recorded 1.085 million UCC complaints, about 1.5 complaints per million calls, amid 730.82 billion calls and 691.09 billion SMS messages on the network.

TRAI barred over 1.37 lakh resources for 15 days for first violations and disconnected repeat offenders for a year, blocked 2,873 SMS headers, and introduced a dedicated 140xx numbering series for promotional calls that are pre‑verified against customer Do‑Not‑Disturb (DND) preferences. The TRAI DND app handled 89 % of complaints, while AI‑based spam filters flagged tens of billions of suspected spam calls and messages. More than 1.12 billion subscribers have not set any DND preference, leaving them exposed to commercial communications.
