The government says the rollout of E20 fuel – petrol blended with 20 % ethanol – lowers vehicle mileage by 2 % to 6 % depending on vehicle category and age, while delivering better acceleration, improved ride quality and roughly 30 % lower carbon emissions compared with E10. Joint studies by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, the Indian Institute of Petroleum, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and the Automotive Research Association of India found no engine failures and no need for any modifications to cars or two‑wheelers. Legacy vehicles showed no abnormal wear or performance decline.

A limited exception applies to some BS‑III vehicles manufactured between 1 April 2005 and before 2016, where certain rubber parts and gaskets may need replacement – a repair that can be handled during routine servicing. The rollout was phased after extensive laboratory tests, field trials and stakeholder consultations. The ethanol‑blending programme is credited with cushioning petrol prices during global crude spikes, saving consumers about ₹30 per litre, reducing import dependence and saving roughly ₹1.97 lakh crore in foreign exchange, while cutting over 950 lakh metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Demand for ethanol‑free premium petrol has surged, with sales doubling despite a price premium of about 57 % over regular fuel.
