India's E20 Ethanol Fuel Policy Sparks Legal Battles and Political Pushback

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari defended the government's rollout of E20 petrol, stating that all E10‑compliant vehicles can safely use the 20% ethanol blend and that anyone who prefers pure petrol can purchase it at a higher price. He said, “If you don’t want ethanol‑blended fuel you can buy 100% petrol, but you will have to pay more,” and dismissed claims of engine damage as a politically motivated misinformation campaign.

Opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party demanded that consumers be given a choice between pure petrol and E20, complained of reduced mileage and higher wear on older vehicles, and launched a nationwide petition and a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a meeting.

The Nagpur Cyber Police registered a First Information Report against four social‑media influencers—including YouTuber Manish Kashyap, Desi Boys, Harshit Rathi and Anklesh Invate—accusing them of spreading false, defamatory content about Gadkari and the ethanol policy.

Consumer courts in Raipur issued the first known rulings on the E20 rollout: one ordered a vehicle manufacturer to compensate a car owner for alleged engine damage, while another directed Maruti Suzuki to replace a Grand Vitara with an E20‑compatible model, citing the lack of consumer choice at fuel stations.

Gadkari also rejected allegations of a conflict of interest in his family's sugar‑ethanol business, saying his sons run the business, that it accounts for less than 0.5% of India's ethanol market, and that he has no influence over ethanol pricing.
