Indigenous communities celebrate cultural heritage in Mexico

In observance of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, various Mexican communities held events to celebrate and preserve their ancestral heritage.

In Texcoco, the municipal government organized a cultural exchange at the Municipal Garden involving 16 indigenous groups. The event included music, traditional dances, and ceremonies to honor the municipality's thousand-year history. Local officials emphasized the importance of protecting native languages, ancestral knowledge, and community organizational forms to ensure these traditions are passed to future generations.

In Mexico City, the Mega Calenda parade featured the ‘Danza de los Diablos’ from Santiago Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca. This participation highlighted the living culture of the Mixteca region, where approximately 76 percent of the population identifies as indigenous. The parade traveled from the Angel of Independence to the Zócalo, showcasing the music, clothing, and traditions of indigenous peoples to a wider audience.
