Indigenous communities in Mexico face legal defense denials

The Mesoamerican Indigenous Observatory (OIM) has denounced the Federal Institute of Public Defense (IFDP) in Mexico for allegedly leaving indigenous communities defenseless. The organization claims that IFDP delegations in the state capital and Ciudad Valles have refused to provide legal representation or file injunctions regarding the consultation process for the General Law on Human Rights for Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples (LGDHPIA).

OIM representative Juan Felipe Cisneros Sánchez stated that the refusal to act constitutes an omission of duties and legal simulation. He noted that indigenous representatives sought legal aid to challenge irregularities in the consultation, but faced rejection and delays. The organization expressed suspicion that these evasive actions may be intended to protect the state legislative process from judicial intervention.
