Indigenous women lead global observances on International Day
September 5 marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, a day dedicated to recognizing the leadership, resilience, and challenges faced by indigenous women globally. In Brazil, the date has been expanded to include a national day for the protection and combat of violence against indigenous women and girls.
Various cultural and social activities are being held to honor indigenous heritage. In Mexico, experimental music inspired by Oaxacan traditions will be performed at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. In Chile, the Thaki Warminaka fair in Arica celebrates the ancestral knowledge and leadership of indigenous women, while the dance work ‘Tinkucuna’ marks ten years of Andean contemporary research.
In Paraguay, indigenous midwives are advocating for the recognition of their ancestral healthcare practices, noting the difficulties they face when accessing formal hospital systems. These events collectively highlight the ongoing struggle for indigenous women to secure rights, access education, and maintain cultural autonomy in the face of systemic challenges.
