Overview

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Women and Girls, observed on September 5, honors the legacy of Aymara leader Bartolina Sisa. Following a United Nations expansion in late 2025, the observance now formally includes girls to increase visibility for indigenous youth.

In Argentina, commemorative efforts have expanded. While municipalities in Trevelin and Comodoro Rivadavia have organized ceremonies, the Buenos Aires Legislature also held a ceremony in the Chamber of Deputies to honor twelve indigenous women for their cultural contributions and career trajectories.

In Guatemala, discussions have shifted toward recognizing indigenous women as active decision-makers, and in Peru, women in regions like Loreto continue to lead in managing water resources. Despite these celebrations, the day remains a critical platform for addressing systemic violence and the need for legal frameworks that respect indigenous autonomy.
