IndiGo flight makes emergency landing in Hyderabad after power bank fire

An IndiGo flight (6E 6115) traveling from New Delhi to Chennai was forced to make an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on Sunday, October 11, after a power bank caught fire. The incident occurred mid-flight when smoke and flames were detected emanating from a passenger's electronic device stored in an overhead luggage compartment.

Cabin crew members responded immediately by using onboard fire extinguishers to contain the flames. Passengers reportedly attempted to assist by using bags and clothing to help suppress the fire. Following safety protocols, the pilots diverted the Airbus A321neo to Hyderabad, where it landed safely. All 180 passengers and seven crew members were reported safe, with no injuries recorded.

IndiGo arranged an alternative aircraft to transport the passengers to their original destination in Chennai. The incident has renewed discussions regarding the safety of lithium-ion batteries. Aviation authorities, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), have previously issued advisories prohibiting the storage of power banks in overhead bins or checked luggage, requiring them to be kept in cabin baggage within passenger reach.
