IndiGo flight power bank safety incidents
Overview
A series of safety incidents involving IndiGo flights has highlighted risks associated with lithium-ion power banks. On October 11, an Airbus A321neo traveling from New Delhi to Chennai was forced to make an emergency landing in Hyderabad after a power bank caught fire in an overhead luggage compartment. Cabin crew used fire extinguishers to contain the flames, and all 180 passengers and seven crew members landed safely without injury.
On October 14, a separate IndiGo flight traveling from Hyderabad to Srinagar was forced to return to its parking bay after officials discovered a power bank had been placed in checked baggage. While the aircraft had already pushed back and was taxiing, the violation was identified before takeoff.
Following the fire incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a specific ban on the MOBIKINS MK-PB-04 power bank model for all flights operating to, from, and within India. DGCA chief Vir Vikram Yadav instructed airlines to ensure this specific model is not carried in passenger baggage or transported as cargo.
These incidents have reinforced aviation safety protocols and advisories from the DGCA, which require power banks to be kept in cabin baggage rather than checked luggage to mitigate fire risks. Airlines are also required to train cabin crew to respond to lithium battery malfunctions and report such incidents to the regulator.
