Indira Ekadashi 2026: Observance date and ritual significance
Indira Ekadashi, a significant Hindu fasting day observed during Pitru Paksha, will be observed on October 6, 2026. The observance is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to provide peace and liberation to ancestors.
In 2026, the Ekadashi Tithi begins in the early hours of October 6 and concludes on the night of October 7. Devotees are advised to perform the fast on October 6, with the auspicious 'parana' (breaking of the fast) scheduled for the morning of October 7 between 06:14 and 08:39.
The day is marked by the convergence of four auspicious yogas: Sarvartha Siddhi, Siddha, Sadhya, and Shubh. Religious traditions suggest performing puja with yellow sandalwood, flowers, and Tulsi leaves, while also engaging in acts of charity such as donating ghee, milk, and food to the needy.
According to mythological accounts, the importance of this fast is illustrated by the story of King Indrasen of Mahishmati, who performed the ritual to liberate his father from suffering in Yamaloka. To maintain the sanctity of the day, practitioners are advised to avoid eating rice, consuming meat or alcohol, and cutting hair or nails.
