Indira Gandhi Zoological Park receives new species in animal exchange

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam has received several new species through an inter-state animal exchange programme with the Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

As part of the exchange, IGZP received three zebras, a red-necked wallaby, common marmosets, and cotton-top tamarins. In return, the zoo sent Indian gaurs, stump-tailed macaques, and gharials to the trust. The cotton-top tamarin, which is native to Colombia and classified as critically endangered, is being exhibited at IGZP for the first time.

Curator G. Mangamma stated that the process followed all animal welfare norms, including Central Zoo Authority approval, health screenings, and safe transport. The new animals have been placed under quarantine and will be displayed to the public following mandatory health assessments. The exchange aims to strengthen conservation breeding programmes and diversify the zoo's collection.
