Indira Gandhi Zoological Park conservation activities

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam has reported significant developments in its conservation and species management efforts.

In August, the facility recorded over 125 births of various animals and birds through its conservation breeding programme. Notable successes included the birth of three striped hyena cubs, a species listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List, as well as various species such as bison, star tortoises, and wild boars. Officials utilized artificial incubation to support several of these births.

By September, the zoo expanded its collection through an inter-state animal exchange programme with the Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Gujarat. IGZP received zebras, a red-necked wallaby, marmosets, and cotton-top tamarins—the latter being a critically endangered species native to Colombia. In exchange, the zoo provided Indian gaurs, stump-tailed macaques, and gharials. The new arrivals were placed under quarantine for health assessments following approval from the Central Zoo Authority.
