Indira Gandhi Zoological Park records over 125 animal and bird births

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) in Visakhapatnam has reported a significant surge in its conservation breeding programme, recording the births of over 125 animals and birds in recent weeks.

The newborns include a diverse range of species, such as one bison, 40 star tortoises, 35 wild boars, 20 spotted deer, five sambar deer, seven Indian peafowls, three striped hyena cubs, two Indian porcupines, two grey pelicans, two marmosets, and one Blue-and-Gold Macaw chick. The zoo also successfully hatched 10 Red Jungle Fowl chicks.

Zoo officials highlighted the use of artificial incubation to support these births. The Red Jungle Fowl chicks were hatched after 21 days of controlled temperature and humidity, while the Blue-and-Gold Macaw chick is currently being hand-reared by veterinary experts. Additionally, the birth of three striped hyena cubs—a species listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List—marks a notable success for the facility’s ecological management efforts.
