Indo-Pacific nations strengthen military deterrence amid regional shifts

The Indo-Pacific region is experiencing significant strategic shifts as nations respond to growing military and nuclear capabilities in China, Russia, and North Korea.

Japan is re-examining its long-standing pacifist defense policy and its reliance on the United States’ doctrine of Extended Nuclear Deterrence. This shift is driven by regional nuclear proliferation and territorial disputes, including the Kurile Island chain conflict with Russia.

Simultaneously, a network of maritime deterrence is emerging through the acquisition of Indian-origin BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. This “BrahMos belt” includes the Philippines, which has strengthened defense ties with the United States, Japan, Australia, and India to counter pressure in the South China Sea. India is also expanding these defense exports to countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia to bolster regional security landscapes.
