Indonesia's PLN Implements Rolling Blackouts Across Java Over Plant Failures

Since June 8 2026, PT PLN (Persero) has carried out rolling power outages across multiple regions of Java after technical problems forced two large power‑plant units offline. The utility said the load‑shedding measures are temporary, aimed at maintaining grid balance while repairs are undertaken.

One of the affected plants was restored and synchronised with the grid on June 21, helping to reduce the frequency of outages. The Energy Ministry stressed the issue is not due to a coal shortage, noting that coal allocations exceed national demand and that the disruptions stem from operational and distribution challenges within PLN.

Local businesses have reported material losses: an ice‑cream shop in Probolinggo suffered product spoilage, while a decorative‑fish trader saw up to 40 % mortality of stock during blackouts, costing several hundred thousand rupiah daily. Merchants also complain of fines for late electricity bills despite suffering losses when power is cut, and they seek clearer advance notice and compensation.

In Yogyakarta, PLN scheduled maintenance on June 23 that will temporarily suspend supply in several neighbourhoods between 10:00 and 13:00 to install construction work (PBPD). The utility advises customers to prepare for such interruptions and promises prompt restoration once work finishes.
