Indonesia accelerates renewable energy transition via solar and geothermal projects
Indonesia is accelerating its transition toward renewable energy through large-scale solar and geothermal initiatives. The government has identified 9,000 hectares of state-managed land and various water reservoirs to support a planned 30-gigawatt solar power rollout. This project, announced by President Prabowo Subianto, aims to replace 13 gigawatts of diesel-fired power plants to improve energy independence and fiscal efficiency, particularly in remote regions. Floating solar technology is also being prioritized, with a facility planned for the Saguling Reservoir.
In the geothermal sector, Indonesia holds the world's largest resource potential, estimated at over 23,200 MW. However, officials note that the country lags behind the United States in implementation, with only about 11.6 percent of its geothermal potential currently utilized.
These energy shifts are being driven by rising electricity demand, including a projected increase in data center consumption from 6.7 TWh in 2024 to 26 TWh by 2030. To meet these needs, Indonesia is targeting a renewable energy share of 19 to 23 percent by 2030 as part of its broader goal to reach Net Zero Emissions by 2060.
