Indonesia achieves rice self-sufficiency ahead of 2029 target
Indonesia has achieved rice self-sufficiency three years ahead of its original 2029 target, according to Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Special Envoy for Climate and Energy. Government rice stocks have reached approximately 5.3 million tons, leading to a shortage of state-owned storage space and necessitating the rental of private warehouses by Bulog.
In conjunction with these developments, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) reported that the rice food assistance program for the July-September 2026 period is 97 percent complete, with 967.5 thousand tons distributed. The program, which targets 33.24 million recipients receiving 10 kilograms of rice per month, will continue through the October-December period. This assistance is intended to stabilize rice prices and support low-income households. Distribution in eastern provinces, including Papua, West Papua, and Central Papua, has reached 100 percent completion.
