Indonesia manages rice reserves and food security programs
Overview
Indonesia continues its large-scale food security and drought mitigation initiatives. Perum Bulog is distributing approximately 997,200 tons of rice to 33.24 million beneficiaries for the July–September 2026 period. As of early September 2026, officials report that food security remains stable despite potential El Nino disruptions. Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani stated that national rice stocks are approximately 4.9 million tons, following a peak of 5.4 million tons. By mid-September 2026, government rice reserves decreased further to 4.722 million tons, a reduction attributed to massive food aid distribution and the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program, which has distributed approximately 800,000 tons of rice to maintain market stability. To meet consumer demand for high-quality products, BULOG has partnered with PT Padi Indonesia Maju, a member of the Wilmar Group, to produce and distribute premium rice through modern retail networks. Regarding the rice assistance program, the government has extended support through December 2026 to protect low-income households from weather-related supply pressures. In West Sumatra, distribution has reached 49.46 percent of the total quota, involving 648,991 beneficiaries and 19,469.730 tons of rice. Alex Indra Lukman, Vice Chairman of Commission IV of the DPR RI, has urged authorities to accelerate this process. Recent distribution efforts include the Manokwari branch delivering 184.56 tons of food assistance via sea to 6,152 recipients in Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua. In East Java, Bulog Malang is intervening to stabilize premium rice prices and address shortages in traditional markets, with plans to distribute over 500 tons. Additionally, in Karawang, West Java, officials from the DPR RI oversaw the distribution of 30 kilograms of rice per recipient to approximately 370 households to alleviate economic burdens. Beyond rice, BULOG is managing corn reserves, having achieved 66.05 percent of its 2026 SPHP target with 159.3 thousand tons distributed.
