Indonesia acts to stabilise live chicken prices as food costs rise

Indonesia’s food market saw a sharp rise in prices on Monday, with data from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center showing red chilli up 3.03% to Rp69,600 per kg and live chicken prices dropping below the government’s benchmark of Rp19,500 per kg in several regions. Other staples such as red onion and garlic also recorded notable increases.

In response, the Ministry of Agriculture announced measures to stabilise live chicken prices, urging slaughterhouses and poultry producers not to sell below the set benchmark. Officials highlighted the strain on small‑scale farmers, especially in Central Java where live birds were being sold for as low as Rp15,000 per kg, and called for coordinated action across the supply chain to protect farmer incomes and market balance.
