Indonesia strengthens energy security through production targets and B50 biodiesel

Indonesia is implementing several strategies to bolster its energy security and mitigate the impact of global energy volatility. PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) has set ambitious production targets for 2027, aiming for 708,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 3,139 MMscfd of gas. This growth is expected to be driven by aggressive merger and acquisition (M&A) activities, contributing approximately 130,000 BOEPD, alongside increased exploration and well services.

In the biofuels sector, the distribution of B50 biodiesel (a 50 percent blend) has reportedly proceeded smoothly since its implementation. BPH Migas is now encouraging businesses to enhance FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) storage facilities to manage the hygroscopic nature of the fuel. Meanwhile, industry groups like ASPEBINDO are advocating for the transition of bioenergy from a mere discussion topic into a fully integrated industrial ecosystem.

These domestic efforts contribute to Indonesia's resilience against global energy shocks, such as those caused by conflicts in the Middle East. According to a JPMorgan report, Indonesia ranks highly globally for its protection against oil and gas price fluctuations due to its low import dependency and strong domestic energy protections.
