Overview

Indonesia is aggressively advancing its renewable energy agenda, centered on mandatory biodiesel and bioethanol mandates. The B50 biodiesel blend, implemented in July 2026, has reached approximately 94 percent of participating gas stations, with full coverage expected by October 1, 2026. This shift is projected to increase domestic crude palm oil (CPO) absorption to between 15.2 and 16.3 million tons annually. Consequently, domestic CPO consumption is expected to surpass export volumes for the first time in 2026, accounting for 51.3 percent of national usage. Regarding bioethanol, the government is targeting an E10 gasoline blend by 2027 and an E20 blend by 2028. President Prabowo Subianto has ordered the production of E20 within two years. To support this, the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing 1 to 2 million hectares of land for feedstock, primarily sugarcane, but also cassava, corn, and sorghum. PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara (Persero) is mapping up to 1 million hectares for these energy crops to avoid depleting sugarcane supplies reserved for food. The Indonesian Sugarcane Farmers Association (APTRI) has emphasized that land allocation must be accompanied by a robust industrial ecosystem of approximately 100 processing plants.
