Indonesia: B50 rollout and ethanol blend mandates
Entities: bioethanol · sorghum · Indonesia · Bahlil Lahadalia · Ali Ahmudi Achyak
Overview
Indonesia’s mandatory B50 biodiesel blend took effect on 9 July 2026, requiring half of diesel to be sourced from domestic palm oil. The government aims for B50 to be available at every public fuel station by 1 October 2026, with a three‑month transition to clear existing B40 stocks and a full evaluation scheduled for December. Deputy Energy Minister Enia Listiani and Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono highlighted the blend’s role in energy self‑sufficiency and farmer welfare, noting it will eliminate diesel imports. The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs says the mandate will not curb crude palm‑oil exports, citing the earlier shift from B35 to B40 that lifted domestic demand by 3–4 million KL while export volumes kept growing. Expected outcomes include a cut of about 44 million tonnes of CO₂‑eq, savings of roughly US$9.5 billion (≈ Rp 170 trillion) in foreign‑exchange, and up to 2.1 million jobs. Rail operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia reported a 17.8 % year‑on‑year rise in plantation freight, reflecting heightened logistics demand. In July 2026 the energy ministry announced a 10 % ethanol blend (E10) for gasoline in 2027, moving to 20 % (E20) by 2028‑2029. While the original roadmap cited cassava, sugarcane and corn, a later statement by Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia added sorghum as a low‑cost feedstock and called for subsidies on seeds, fertilizer and research to narrow the price gap with fossil gasoline. Pertamina’s regional arm expanded Biosolar B50 distribution to 590 stations across Sulawesi (280 in South, 102 in Southeast, 76 in Central, 71 in North, 35 in West, 26 in Gorontalo). Experts warned that older diesel engines may face viscosity, solvent and hygroscopic challenges, urging accelerated fuel‑filter changes and seal upgrades.
