Indonesia advances biofuel production with palm oil and nyamplung research

Indonesia is promoting palm‑oil based bioenergy as part of its energy‑security strategy. Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita highlighted the sector at the "Palm Oil and the Future of Sustainable Energy" forum during the INNOPROM 2026 exhibition in Yekaterinburg, Russia, and pointed to the mandatory B50 biodiesel programme that began in July 2026, along with sustainability measures such as the ISPO certification system.

Research by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) shows that the native nyamplung tree (Calophyllum inophyllum) yields seeds with 60‑70% oil, suitable for biodiesel, biokerosene and sustainable aviation fuel. The plant grows on marginal coastal lands, offering a way to rehabilitate degraded areas while reducing dependence on imported fuels and supporting a circular‑economy approach through the use of residues for pellets, biochar and other products.
