Indonesia reports lower unemployment, rising poverty line and Gini amid population dip
Indonesia’s social safety net remains in place, with the Ministry of Social Affairs confirming that key assistance programmes such as Direct Cash Assistance (BLT), the Family Hope Program (PKH) and the Social Health Insurance (BPJS) continue to receive funding in the 2026 state budget.
The national poverty line was raised to Rp 669,235 per capita per month, while the overall number of people living below the line fell to 22.93 million, a decrease of 430 thousand since September 2025. In Jakarta, the count of residents classified as poor dropped to 432 thousand, representing 3.96 % of the city’s population.
Unemployment also improved. The open unemployment rate fell to 4.65 % in May 2026, equating to 7.22 million job‑seekers, down from February. Papua recorded the highest provincial rate at 7.08 %. The Gini coefficient, a measure of income inequality, rose slightly to 0.368 in March 2026 after a period of decline.
Jakarta’s population shrank by 2,838 people in the first half of 2026, according to the civil registration agency. To fund infrastructure projects, the provincial government plans to issue regional bonds worth up to Rp 5.2 trillion, targeting extensions of the LRT network and other public works.
