Indonesia advances digital infrastructure via satellite cooperation and IXP expansion

Indonesia is advancing its digital infrastructure through international cooperation and domestic network optimization. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is exploring partnerships with Russia to enhance satellite technology and artificial intelligence (AI). These discussions include potential access to satellite data, the establishment of research laboratories, and educational programs to strengthen human resource capacity in these sectors.

Domestically, the development of Internet Exchange Points (IXP) remains a priority to ensure national digital sovereignty and efficiency. By utilizing local IXPs, such as the Indonesia Internet Exchange (IIX) launched by APJII, the country aims to reduce latency, lower international bandwidth costs, and improve data security by keeping domestic traffic within national borders. This infrastructure helps prevent the ‘tromboning effect,’ where local data unnecessarily routes through foreign servers.

These developments occur amid a rising global threat landscape. Reports indicate a significant escalation in sophisticated cyberattacks, including DDoS incidents and AI-driven phishing, necessitating robust digital defenses and localized network management to protect critical infrastructure.
