Indonesia advances fisheries through port modernization and China cooperation
Indonesia is advancing its maritime and fisheries sector through infrastructure modernization and new international partnerships. In Bali, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono announced the groundbreaking for the development of the Pengambengan Nusantara Fisheries Port (PPN) in Jembrana. This project aims to establish a modern, integrated, and clean fishing hub following international standards. Consequently, the Benoa Port in Denpasar will shift its focus toward the tourism sector, specifically through the Benoa Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH) and mangrove-based activities.
Simultaneously, a significant fisheries cooperation agreement between Indonesia and China has been launched in Tual, Maluku. Utilizing the Technical Cooperation Guidelines (TCG) scheme, the agreement allows Chinese fishing vessels to operate within Indonesian waters under specific regulations. A key requirement of this partnership is that all catches must be landed at ports in Maluku for local processing, intended to add value to the regional economy. This development follows a decade of negotiations and aims to bolster Indonesia's aquaculture and capture fisheries capabilities.
