Indonesia advances waste management through national movement and worker protections

Indonesia is intensifying efforts to manage waste through national movements and improved social protections for workers. The Ministry of Home Affairs has launched the ‘Gerakan Indonesia ASRI’ (Clean Indonesia Movement), an initiative championed by President Prabowo Subianto. Secretary General Tomsi Tohir emphasized that waste management requires community involvement, specifically through waste sorting at the household level to transform refuse into useful products like electricity or pellets.

In support of these environmental goals, social protections are being extended to those working directly with waste. At the GO-SARI 3R Waste Treatment Site, workers who convert waste into energy have been granted coverage by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. This coverage includes Work Accident Insurance (JKK) and Death Benefits (JKM), aimed at mitigating the occupational and social risks faced by informal waste processors. This initiative was supported by PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Rewulu as part of its social and environmental responsibility program.
