Indonesia warns illegal rice imports threaten food self-sufficiency
Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman has warned that illegal rice imports pose a significant threat to the nation's food self-sufficiency goals and harm approximately 115 million farmers.
During a press conference regarding the seizure of illegal imports including rice, salt, and gunpowder, officials noted that smuggling undermines domestic production achievements. The Minister highlighted that previous rice-related violations have resulted in massive economic losses, citing Rp98 trillion in losses from premium and medium rice violations and Rp89 trillion in alleged fortified rice violations.
Government authorities, including the Ministry of Finance and Customs, are increasing surveillance to protect the domestic market and ensure the quality and distribution of food products for consumers.
