Indonesia aims to solve up to 80% of waste problem by 2029

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan announced that Indonesia targets resolving 70‑80% of its national waste problem by 2029. The plan relies on accelerating waste‑to‑energy (WtE) facilities, improving waste‑management systems and encouraging household waste sorting.

Around 30 WtE plants are slated for development in urban and metropolitan areas that generate more than 1,000 tons of waste daily. Groundbreaking for three sites is imminent, while 12 additional projects are entering partner‑selection phases, with operations expected to start by 2028. The initiative is guided by Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025 and emphasizes joint action between government and the public.

Hasan highlighted Jakarta’s role as a pioneer in source‑separated waste management, involving neighborhood groups and community organisations, and called for nationwide participation to turn organic waste into fertilizer and recyclable materials into economic value.
