Indonesia allocates Rp14 trillion for non-ASN teacher allowances
The Indonesian government has allocated over Rp14 trillion for non-civil servant (non-ASN) teacher allowances in 2026. While the budget aims to improve welfare, officials emphasize that financial increases must be paired with better governance, improved teacher distribution, and enhanced competency to effectively raise education quality.
Lestari Moerdijat, Vice Chair of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), noted that teacher issues extend beyond administration to the equitable provision of education services. Data from the 2024 IDEAS survey indicates significant income inequality, with 74.3 percent of honorary or contract teachers earning less than Rp2 million per month, and 20.5 percent earning less than Rp500,000.
The government plans to accelerate Teacher Professional Education (PPG) for 230,000 active teachers and provide technology, AI, and coding training for 361,000 others. Additionally, professional allowances are slated to increase from Rp1.5 million to Rp2 million per month.
