Indonesia's BRIN to launch satellite from India and build Biak spaceport by 2027

Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) announced that a domestically built micro‑satellite, slated for launch in early January 2027, will be sent to orbit from India under a framework agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation. The satellite, described by BRIN chief Arif Satria as supporting food‑security monitoring, environmental observation and other remote‑sensing needs, is part of a broader push for self‑reliant space capability.

In parallel, BRIN is accelerating the construction of Indonesia’s first national spaceport on Biak Island, Papua. The site was selected for its proximity to the equator, which makes launches more efficient. The government intends the spaceport to enable Indonesia to launch its own satellites and eventually offer launch services to neighbouring countries, creating a new high‑tech industry and skilled jobs.

These initiatives stem from the 16 strategic agreements signed during President Prabowo Subianto’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which included the extension of BRIN‑ISRO cooperation, missile technology deals and cultural projects. The space‑related accords aim to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the emerging Asian space economy.
