Indonesia and Malaysia Expand Subsidized Housing for Low‑Income Workers

Indonesia's government announced a programme to broaden eligibility for subsidised homes to include informal‑sector employees and partners of online‑motorbike‑taxi services. The plan, presented by Housing Minister Maruarar Sirait, will use more flexible financing, digital data and cooperation with banks to lower administrative barriers and increase the reach of first‑time home ownership. Officials say the move should raise living standards, improve productivity and stimulate the construction sector.

In Malaysia, the REHDA Institute warned that the current cross‑subsidy model – using profits from market‑price homes to fund affordable units – is increasingly burdening the M40 middle‑income group. Chairman Datuk Jeffrey Ng cited rising incomes, shifting demographics and a surplus of unsold affordable units, urging a review of the policy and the creation of a national housing agency to align subsidies with real‑world data and demand.

Both countries are reassessing housing‑subsidy frameworks to better serve low‑ and middle‑income households amid changing economic conditions.
