Indonesia approves revised Police Law with new retirement and education rules

Indonesia’s House of Representatives (Commission III) and the government have finalized a revision of the 2002 Police Law. The amendment sets a maximum retirement age of 61 for the police chief and 60 for senior officers, with lower ranks retiring at 59. It retains the minimum education requirement of a high school diploma, while allowing candidates with disabilities to join if they meet competency standards, and introduces a special pathway for university graduates.

The draft was examined through a detailed inventory of 112 issues, comprising 32 unchanged items, 36 editorial changes, 12 substantive additions, 8 new substantive items and 24 deletions. After completing this review, the bill was moved to the second‑reading plenary session and formally enacted as law.
