Indonesia's MBG program faces corruption probe and new food safety rules
The Indonesian National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has introduced new safety protocols for the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program. To prevent food poisoning, meals must now be consumed within a maximum of four hours after cooking, a deadline that will be clearly indicated on labels. BGN head Sudaryono has also urged students and teachers not to take meals home, noting that improper storage can lead to quality degradation and illness.
Simultaneously, the Attorney General's Office (Kejagung) is investigating alleged corruption within the MBG program's management for the 2025-2026 period. Investigators have summoned 16 witnesses, including 10 company directors and BGN experts, to strengthen the case. Seven individuals have already been named suspects, including former BGN Head Dadan Hindayana and two former deputies.
Despite these legal challenges, Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) stated that the MBG program will continue as it is a key campaign promise of President Prabowo Subianto. Officials emphasized the need for improved transparency and stricter governance to ensure the program's accountability.
