Indonesia faces widespread forest fires across multiple provinces

Indonesia is facing widespread forest and land fires (karhutla) across several regions, driven by low rainfall and extreme weather conditions. In Papua Tengah, BMKG detected 1,923 hotspots between August 10 and 22, with Nabire recording the highest concentration of 1,069 hotspots. The fires in Nabire have burned approximately 396 hectares across seven districts, impacting air quality and forcing local authorities to request aerial water bombing assistance.

In West Papua, fires have approached the BP Tangguh LNG production facilities in Teluk Bintuni, reaching within 100 meters of condensate tanks. Due to difficult terrain, authorities have deployed aerial fleets to combat the flames. Similarly, in Lampung, fires in the Way Kambas National Park have consumed over 774 hectares.

Other significant incidents include fires in Ilaga, Puncak, which destroyed homes and livestock, and in Kalimantan Barat, where the BNPB deployed water bombing operations to manage 13 hectares of land. In East Java, firefighting efforts at Mount Arjuno also rely on helicopters due to steep, inaccessible terrain. Authorities are utilizing a combination of ground teams, aerial water bombing, and weather modification operations to mitigate the spreading fires.
