Indonesia authorities urge vigilance against rising digital financial scams

Indonesian officials and lawmakers are calling for increased public vigilance as digital financial fraud becomes more prevalent. Yudha Novanza Utama, a member of Commission I of the DPR RI, advised citizens to verify all messages, links, and transaction requests before sharing personal data or responding to suspicious communications.

Data from the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC) reveals the scale of the issue, with 637,055 reports of financial transaction fraud received between November 2024 and July 2026. During this period, 1,179,881 accounts were reported and verified, leading to the blocking of 607,210 accounts. Through cross-agency coordination, the IASC has blocked approximately Rp 724.1 billion in fraudulent funds and successfully returned Rp 204.3 billion to victims.

Satgas PASTI has identified several common tactics, including phishing, malware, illegal investments, and fraudulent job offers. Scammers often use intimidation, threatening to leak personal data or contact a victim's associates to force payments. Authorities advise the public not to panic when faced with threats, to avoid clicking suspicious links, and to never provide OTPs, PINs, or access to mobile device data to unverified parties.
