Online and investment scam activity in Indonesia

Overview

Authorities in Indonesia are addressing significant financial losses resulting from sophisticated online and investment scams. In East Java, police uncovered a transnational scam involving fraudulent cryptocurrency and stock trading that caused losses of approximately Rp12.9 billion. Three suspects—identified as FR, KPP, and WH—have been named in connection with the operation, which used social media to lure victims into WhatsApp groups promising returns between 30 percent and 200 percent. Victims were directed to fraudulent platforms including YWWSDC, INVESCOS, and CANTVR. The network showed links to Malaysia and Vietnam, with one nominee company account recording Rp3.19 trillion in transactions in a single day on December 5, 2025.

On a broader scale, the Indonesian government is calling for enhanced cross-sector coordination to combat rising digital fraud. Data from the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC) indicates that between November 2024 and July 2026, there were 637,055 reported cases of financial transaction fraud. During this period, authorities verified 1,179,881 accounts and blocked 607,210 of them, successfully blocking approximately Rp724.1 billion in fraudulent funds and returning Rp204.3 billion to victims.

Officials noted that scam chains involve multiple layers, including telecommunications access, platform impersonation, and rapid money laundering. Common tactics identified by Satgas PASTI include phishing, malware, and illegal investments, often involving intimidation tactics. Lawmakers are urging public vigilance, advising citizens to verify all links and never share OTPs or PINs with unverified parties.
