Indonesia car market slows in May 2026 as Toyota Innova overtakes Avanza in sales

In May 2026 Indonesia’s automobile market showed a slowdown, with wholesales falling to 69,219 units from 80,779 in April. Despite the dip, cumulative sales from January to May rose 12.6% year‑on‑year to 359,015 units. Toyota’s Kijang Innova (Zenix and Reborn versions) led the market with 6,658 units, reclaiming the top spot from the long‑dominant Avanza. Suzuki Carry pick‑up secured second place with 3,793 units, followed by Daihatsu Gran Max pick‑up (3,565 units) and the Toyota Avanza, now fourth with 3,486 units. Chinese electric model Jaecoo J5 entered the top five, selling 2,943 units, while other popular models such as the Toyota Calya and Rush remained in the top ten. The slowdown reflects broader pressure on consumer purchasing power, yet the market’s cumulative growth suggests demand remains resilient.

The shift indicates a growing preference for larger pick‑up vehicles and emerging electric options, signaling a changing competitive landscape for manufacturers in Indonesia.
