Indonesia automotive market shows uneven growth in 2026
The Indonesian automotive market is experiencing uneven recovery according to Gaikindo data for the period of January to September 2026. While national vehicle sales have grown, with wholesale figures rising 21% to 679,020 units and retail sales increasing 15.4% to 676,223 units, specific segments are facing declines.
Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) sales have struggled, with wholesale distribution dropping 11% to 83,997 units compared to the previous year. Retail LCGC sales also fell by 7%. Economists suggest this decline reflects middle-class purchasing power pressures and shifting consumer preferences toward operational efficiency and total cost of ownership.
The Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) segment also saw a significant monthly decline in September 2026, with sales dropping 34% to 1,278 units from August. Despite this dip, the BYD M6 DM remains the top-selling PHEV model in Indonesia. Other notable movements include a 364.3% surge in Jetour T2 i-DM sales and a 187.5% increase for the Jaecoo J8 SHS, even as other models like the Chery Tiggo 8 CSH saw sharp decreases.
