Overview
Indonesia is accelerating its electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem through infrastructure expansion, adjusted subsidy schemes, and significant nickel downstreaming projects. To support the transition, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has implemented a 2025–2030 roadmap to deploy public charging stations. Regarding the National Electric Motorcycle Ecosystem (Molinas), President Prabowo Subianto has announced plans to provide incentives to companies producing one million electric motorcycles domestically, though the government has adjusted the subsidy from Rp5 million to Rp3 million per unit. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa noted that while 69 companies exist in the sector, actual absorption might only reach 100,000 units by the end of 2026.
Market adoption shows significant momentum. In the first nine months of 2026, hybrid vehicle sales grew 41.9% compared to 2025, reaching 65,968 units, with the Toyota Veloz Hybrid emerging as a top model. Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) sales surged by 112% to 117,218 units, while Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) sales grew 209.5%. Financing for EV and hybrid vehicles reached Rp26.20 trillion in August 2026, a 34.67% year-on-year increase reported by the Financial Services Authority (OJK). Notably, used EV and hybrid financing grew by 103.06% in July 2026.
Industrial downstreaming reached a milestone with the first export of EV batteries from the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP). At IWIP, 11 projects with a total investment of approximately $10.2 billion USD were launched. To further stimulate the market, Minister of Industry Muhammad Sarmuji has urged Toyota to accelerate BEV production and increase exports to markets like Australia. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Polytron are expanding their presence in regional hubs, and United E-Motor has launched significant promotional discounts to drive adoption.
