Indonesia’s disaster agencies reported that forest fires (karhutla) and drought dominated disaster activity across the country during the August 2026 dry season. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) cited incidents in South Sulawesi’s Pinrang Regency, where a blaze in Taddakong Village burned about five hectares, and in Central Java’s Wonogiri Regency, where a fire in Gemantar Village affected roughly four hectares. Both incidents caused no casualties.

In the eastern province of Maluku, a fire in the Bula district of Seram Island scorched an estimated 280 hectares, prompting local forest officials to urge residents to stop open‑burning. Drought‑related water shortages were reported in several regions: Banyumas Regency received 27,000 L of clean water for affected villages, while Ngawi Regency in East Java distributed 5,500 L to 11 villages facing depleted wells. The drought also forced the temporary closure of three access points to Bromo National Park, with visitors redirected to alternative routes.

Local authorities in Jakarta, Jambi and other provinces announced heightened preparedness measures, including coordination with the meteorological agency, water‑reserve planning and community outreach to prevent fire ignition. The combined impact of forest fires, water scarcity and tourism disruptions underscores the severity of the El Niño‑driven dry season for Indonesia.
