Indonesia Boosts Intellectual Property Protection for SMEs and Tourism Products

The city of Padang announced a program to strengthen intellectual‑property (HAKI) protection for micro, small and medium enterprises (UMKM). Mayor Fadly Amran said the move, tied to Padang’s bid for UNESCO Creative City status in gastronomy, aims to safeguard local brands—especially culinary products that generate about 40% of the city’s UMKM revenue. Officials highlighted that stronger IP rights will help Padang’s goods stand out domestically and internationally.

At the national level, the Ministry of Tourism and the Directorate General of Intellectual Property signed a five‑year cooperation agreement to protect geographical indications and other IP assets of tourism‑related products. The partnership will provide technical assistance and data sharing to ensure regional specialties are legally protected, enhancing their market value and preserving their authenticity for both domestic and overseas visitors.
