Indonesia advances AI hub with NVIDIA factory

Overview

Indonesia’s AI‑for‑social‑development agenda continues to broaden. Following the second phase of the PMKKA programme that reached most schools, higher‑education institutions are deepening the push. In July 2026 BINUS University opened a Digital Transformation & AI Experience Campus in Semarang, offering AI‑focused tracks, dual‑degree pathways and up to 100 % tuition scholarships for 2027/28, in partnership with firms such as Oracle and IBM. Student‑led initiatives such as the JAPAMAS institution in Desa Japan, Kudus, and the DIGITARUM programme in Desa Taruman, Grobogan, train micro‑enterprises to run TikTok Shop and Shopee stores, producing marketing content and live sales events with university mentors linking village entrepreneurship to the AI‑enabled market.

The Medan city government hosted an AI literacy seminar on 17 July, featuring a free teacher‑training session stressing that AI should augment human effort. The same week, BRICS labour ministers launched the CONECTA platform for digital cooperation, with Indonesia reaffirming its skill‑needs modelling agenda.

Google’s Gemini Report (July 2026) identified Indonesia as the region’s most creative user of the Gemini assistant, generating almost nine million AI‑generated images daily, the majority from mobile devices and native‑language prompts.

In August 2026 the government announced a 360 MW NVIDIA DSX AI Factory in Batam, slated to house up to 170,000 next‑generation GPUs by 2027 and projected to generate US$25‑30 billion in its first six years. Simultaneously, Indonesia became a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, joining 29 nations to shape international AI policy and cooperation, further cementing its ambition to become a Southeast Asian AI hub.
