Indonesia Boosts UMKM Protection with New Insurance Ecosystem and Low-Cost Trademark Fees

President's Special Envoy for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Ahmad Ridha Sabana said strengthening an inclusive insurance ecosystem for UMKM and the digital economy is a national agenda. Speaking at the Indonesia Professional Insurance Forum 2026 in Yogyakarta, he highlighted that Indonesia has about 66.2 million UMKM, contributing roughly 61.7 % of GDP and employing 97 % of the workforce, yet only 28.5 % of them have insurance coverage. Sabana urged that insurance should be embedded at points of payment, delivery, financing and platform operations to support small businesses in a rapidly digitising market.

Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas announced a special tariff for UMKM trademark registration, setting the fee at Rp500 000 compared with Rp2.8 million for non‑UMKM applicants. The measure is part of a broader effort to build an intellectual‑property protection ecosystem and to boost the creative‑economy sector, which now adds about Rp1.150 trillion to Indonesia’s GDP. Both initiatives aim to improve risk protection and competitiveness for millions of micro‑enterprises across the country.
