Indonesia boosts waste management and renewable energy initiatives

A study of the implementation of Qanun No. 6/2012 in the Kecamatan Kota Sigli area found that the local inorganic waste‑collection system remains insufficient. Limited collection vehicles, inadequate transfer stations and landfills, low staffing capacity, inadequate public participation and poor road conditions were cited as major obstacles. The authors recommend stronger supporting regulations, increased budget allocation, community empowerment and better coordination among stakeholders to improve sustainability.

Separately, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and state oil company Pertamina announced a joint effort to strengthen human resources for Indonesia’s energy transition. The partnership will focus on training for a 100 GW solar power program, geothermal development and vocational education, with the aim of reducing fuel‑oil imports, enhancing energy security and stimulating domestic industry. Pertamina will contribute initiatives in solar, geothermal and waste‑to‑energy projects, while the ministry will supply research‑based recommendations, including insights from waste‑management studies, to guide policy and implementation.
