Indonesia National Team fails to reach 2026 AFF Cup semifinals
The Indonesian national football team failed to advance to the semifinals of the 2026 AFF Cup after a 1-1 draw against Singapore, finishing third in Group A. This result follows a string of disappointing performances, including a 0-3 loss to Vietnam, despite early wins against Cambodia and Timor Leste.
In response, the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has issued an apology and announced a comprehensive evaluation process involving the Chairman, the National Team Body, and the coaching staff. PSSI Secretary General Yunus Nusi urged the public not to vilify the players and coaches, emphasizing that the squad represents the nation's future assets.
Coach John Herdman has vowed to revamp the squad and focus on the upcoming FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, which Indonesia will host. Herdman confirmed that key players Kevin Diks and Jay Idzes will join the squad for the September-October tournament, benefiting from its inclusion in the FIFA international match window. PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir noted that the FIFA ASEAN Cup is a significant event, describing it as one of the largest football programs after the World Cup.
