Indonesia prepares for AFF 2026 under new coach
Entities: Rizky Ridho · Pakansari Stadium · Justin Hubner · Marselino Ferdinan · Sumardji
Overview
Indonesia’s senior team has now confirmed a 26‑player squad for the 2026 AFF Championship, retaining five overseas‑based players and adding a record eleven naturalised players such as Jordi Amat and Tim Geypens. Defender Justin Hubner will miss the tournament after Fortuna Sittard refused release, as the competition lies outside the FIFA calendar.
The national side is now led by Canadian‑born English coach John Herdman, who oversaw a three‑week training camp in Bali. The squad features only two pure strikers – naturalised citizen Mitchell Baker and Jens Raven – while six forwards were cut. Veteran goalkeeper Nadeo Argawinata and former star Cristian Gonzales have urged supporters to back the team in its search for the first ASEAN title.
Indonesia’s opening group‑stage match will be against Cambodia on 27 July at the upgraded Pakansari Stadium in Bogor, with Herdman calling for full stadium support. Captaincy is expected to go to Persija Jakarta defender Rizky Ridho, subject to Herdman’s final decision. Midfielder Marselino Ferdinan sustains a training‑ground injury that leaves his availability uncertain, and forward Ole Romeny also faces fitness concerns. The club‑blocked participation of Hubner remains unresolved.
Meanwhile, the under‑17 team kept its preparations, beating Malaysia 3‑0 on 8 July, and President Prabowo Subianto and PSSI officials continue to press the finance ministry for additional APBN funding for football development.
