Indonesia stock market faces volatility amid rising oil prices and US Fed uncertainty

The Indonesian stock market, represented by the IHSG, has faced significant volatility and downward pressure in early September 2026. The index has experienced multiple sessions of decline, driven by a combination of global and domestic factors.

Key external pressures include rising global crude oil prices due to escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as rising US Treasury yields. Additionally, investors are adopting a cautious ‘wait-and-see’ approach ahead of US Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which are expected to influence the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions.

Domestically, the Indonesian Rupiah has weakened against the US Dollar, trading near the Rp17,500 level. While the economy shows some resilience with stable inflation and improved consumer confidence, market analysts note that investor confidence remains fragile. The coal sector faces long-term challenges as global demand is projected to decline over the next five years due to the rise of renewable energy, although demand from India and Southeast Asia may provide some buffer.

In the corporate sector, Niramas Utama Tbk (JELI) saw a significant 41% correction from its IPO price, while various commodity and financial stocks have contributed to the overall market fluctuations.
